Analytical laboratories’ demands on their instrumentation are increasing relentlessly. Requirements for simplified method development and more streamlined routine workflows are combined with the need for ever-lower detection limits and improved accuracy in difficult sample types.
For most users, single quadrupole ICP-MS (SQ-ICP-MS) or bandpass ICP-MS (BP-ICP-MS) has provided sufficient control of interferences to meet their analytical and regulatory needs. But analytical requirements have changed, and laboratories with more challenging applications require instruments that allow them to achieve new and more demanding goals. In the field of inorganic analysis, research and development efforts to address these changing requirements have resulted in the introduction of new tandem MS (MS/MS) instruments that use a triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) configuration. These instruments offer innovative method development tools, lower limits of quantification, wider elemental coverage, and more consistent and reliable analytical results.
This webcast will describe some of the unique characteristics of a tandem MS instrument and will explain the new modes of operations offered by Agilent’s 8900 ICP-QQQ. MS/MS capabilities ensure consistent and controlled reaction chemistry in the collision/reaction cell, delivering the most accurate results across a range of applications, while eliminating the variability and complexity associated with reactive cell gas methods on single-quadrupole and bandpass instruments.

Abe Gutierrez was born and raised in beautiful Arecibo, Puerto Rico. He attended the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez Campus. His first experience with ICP-MS came while he was an Analytical Chemist at Ashland Chemicals in Dallas, TX. In Ashland Chemicals, Abe’s team developed new methodology that included the use of ETV-ICP-MS, Membrane Desolvation and Ultrasonic Nebulizers for semiconductor applications. His passion for sample introduction systems helped him moved to a job as a Research Chemist with Cetac Technologies in Omaha Nebraska. At Cetac he helped with the development of the sample introduction systems for the HP/Agilent ICP-MS.
While at Cetac, Abe also performed demos and ran samples for Agilent; a couple of years later he joined the HP/Agilent team in the US as an Applications specialist.
Abe has changed roles from applications to sales support but he remains part of Agilent’s Field Advisory Team working with R&D, applications chemists and the manufacturing site to help with the introduction and implementation of new and revolutionary technology. Abe is now the ICP-MS Product Specialist for the eastern part of the United States and he lives in South Florida with his wife and 4 kids.
